Liquors Flashcards
Whiskey/Whisky
All whiskeys/whiskys are distilled from fermented grain mash and aged in oak barrels.
Highland Malt Whiskies
(Scotland Single Malts)
Include “Speyside Malts”, all distilled north of the Highland line; they tend to be fall flavored, slightly smoky and sometimes even robust.
Heavy-bodied (Rum)
More sweet and pungent due to being distilled differently.
Islay Malt Whiskies
(Scotland Single Malts)
These “Campbeltown Malts” are produced on the islands of the west coast of Scotland. They are characterized by their pungent full flavor which embodies a hint of sea air.
Blended (Whiskey)
Blends of straight whiskey, neutral grain spirits and blending agents, sweetening and coloring. Light-bodied.
All types of various whiskeys are made with amounts of barley malt. Irish whiskeys and Scotch whiskys use from 40% to 100% malt. American and Canadian whiskeys use 10%.
Major whiskey/whisky producing countries are the United States, Canada, Ireland and Scotland.
Rye (Whiskey)
Distilled from not less than 51% rye. American.
Gin
A neutral spirit re-distilled over juniper berries and other aromatics, such as coriander (a carrot family plant), angelica root, and cassia bark. It is colorless and is not aged. Makes an excellent cocktail base.
Irish (Whiskey)
Distilled from barley. Single-Malt made purley from Malted Barley.
Tequila
Firey mexican liquor is make only from a blue-colored Agave plant. Produced only in two designated regions of Mexico, one surrounding the town of Tequila, the other in the area of Tepatitlan. Ordinary tequila is white. Añejo must be aged for a minimum of one year in white oak casks. Gold tequila is aged in white casks for two to four months.
Corn (Whiskey)
Distilled from not less than 80% corn.
Bourbon (Whiskey)
Distilled form not less than 51% corn.
Scotch (Whiskey)
Distilled from barley with distinctive smokey flavor. Imported from Scotland. Single Malted made entirely from Malted Barley.
Brandy
The oldest of all liquers and is distilled from a fermented mash of grapes or other fruit. A “true” brandy can be distilled from any fruit. When the term brandy is used alone, it always refers to brandy made from grape wine.
Canadian (Whiskey)
Distilled from cereal grain (corn, rye, wheat or barley) blended and aged in Canada for 3 to 5 years.
Bonded (Whiskey)
Straight Whiskey - not a blend of different liquors. Aged for not less than four (4) years and bottled at not less than 100 proof (bottled in bond).
Lowland Malt Whiskies
(Scotland Single Malts)
Distilled south of the Highland line, these whiskies have a gentle, mild character with little pronounced flavors. Lowland malts are highly suitable for the base of Scotland’s fine selection of blended whiskies.
Vodka
Most is produced primarily from corn, wheat and potatoes. It is distilled at a very high alcohol content and highly refined and filtered. Colorless with no pronounced flavor and is almost odorless. Not Aged. It is most versatile and will blend with anything. National drink of Russia.
Rum
Distilled from fermented sugar cane juice (pressed from raw sugar cane), fermented molasses or mixtures of these. It ranges in color from white to very dark.
Light-bodied (Rum)
Light or dark in color. Dark is sweeter but light is most popular.
