Statins exert their effect on? And what happens?
HMG-CoA Reductase. This inhibits the rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis.

What is responsible for transporting energy to most of the cells of the body?
chylomicrons, VLDL, and non-esterified fatty acid
- NOT HDL or LDL
- non-esterified = free fatty acids

A patient with hypertiglyceridemia would most likely benefit from a low card diet if which lipoprotein is elevated in blood levels?
VLDL
What are phytosterols and what do they do?
Plant stanols and sterols are a group of naturally occurring compounds (called phytosterols) found in plant cell membranes. Because they are structurally similar to cholesterol, when consumed, they compete with cholesterol for absorption in the digestive system. As a result, cholesterol absorption is blocked, and blood cholesterol levels go down.
