Lipoproteins Flashcards
Lipoprotein
Transport molecules for tags and cholesterol in the body
Structure of lipoproteins
Thin monolayer of phospholipids with a hydrophobic center containing cholesterol esters/tags. Apoproteins are on the outer layer to allow for binding to different receptors
What is cholesterol made from
Acetal coa
What metabolic pathway is cholesterol synthesis. What is the main regulatory step of this synthesis
This is an anabolic state that requires lots of energy and it is mainly regulated by HMG -COA reductase
What is the difference between cholesterol and cholesterol esters
Cholesterol esters are e more hydrophobic because the -OH group is replaced by an acyl group by acyl transferase
What leads to high cholesterol
Dysfunction with receptors that recycle lipoproteins, excess fat synthesis, or issues with HMG -COA reductase activity
How can you differentiate between lipoproteins
By apoproteins,tag and cholesterol percentage
Chylomicron
Largest lipoprotein made in small intestine and contains apoprotein 48
Very low density lipoprotein (VLDL)
Lipoprotein that goes into the circulatory system
Explain how VLDL gets converted to LDL
Lipoprotein lipase hydrolyses tags in VLDL creating intermediate density lipoprotein and then low density lipoprotein
What are the good and bad cholesterol
Bad cholesterol: low density lipoprotein
Good cholesterol: high density lipoprotein- transports cholesterol back to liver for recycling and tells body when there is enough cholesterol present
Fill in the blank.
The _______________monitors cholesterol levels in the body
Liver
