Ketogenesis Flashcards
When does ketogenesis arise?
When there is too much Acetyl coA in the body and ketone bodies are used as alternate fuel source.
What is Acetyl CoA limited by in the CAC
Oxaloacetate
why would oxaloacetate levels drop when glucose levels drop
Because low glucose means that the oAA will be required elsewhere in gluconeogenesis to produce energy
What are the fates of Acetyl coA
After carbs, fats, and AA are metabolised, they convert into Acetyl coA.
If OAA is present, acetyl coA will turn into citrate in the CAC
If OAA is not present or the body is in a low energy state, or if there is a lot of NADH, it will be converted into Ketone bodies
Where are ketone bodies made
In the liver
Why would ketone bodies, beta hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate contribute to acidosis
Because if they are put in the cell, where the pH is basic and they’re pka’s are relatively low (due to carboxylic group) it will be deprotonated releases protons in the environment
T/F. Ketone bodies can cross the BBB
True
What molecules is needed to produce energy from acetyl coA
Oxaloacetate
Where does this oxaloacetate come from
GNG»_space; Glc» pyruvate
What ketone body gives a characteristic fruity breath symptom?
Acetone. This occurs when you have too much acetyl coA and is a result of too much ketone bodies in the body
