Lipids Flashcards
What is the role of chylomicrons?
Transportation of fats from the intestinal mucosa to the liver
How do chylomicrons behave in the liver?
Release triglycerides and some cholesterol and become LDLs.
Role of LDL
Carries fat and cholesterol to the body’s cells (bad)
Role of HDL
Carry fat and cholesterol back to the liver for excretion
What 5 things make up a fasting lipid profile?
1- Serum total cholesterol 2- Serum LDL- cholesterol 3- Serum triglyceride 4- Serum HDL cholesterol 5- Cholesterol: HDL ratio
Inheritance pattern of familial hypercholesterolaemia?
Autosomal dominant
How common is FH?
Occurs in 1 in 500 individuals
What are FH patients at risk of?
Atherosclerosis, tendon xanthomas, xantheasma of the eye
Where is the mutation in FH
LDL receptor
How does a diagnosis of FH change CHD mortality rate?
> 10% of the population
What is total normal cholesterol?
4.0-6.5mmol/L
You should consider FH in all adults with a total cholesterol greater than…
7.5mmol/L
What is the name of the criteria used to diagnose FH
Simon Broome criteria
Who can you diagnose FH in, according to the Simon Broome criteria?
Total cholesterol >7.5 and LDL-C> 4.9
AND tendon xanthomata or evidence of these in first or second degree relative
OR identified genetic mutation for FH
Who can you diagnose probable FH in according to the Simon Broome criteria?
Totaly cholesterol >7.5 and LDL-C >4.9 and at least one of
1- Familyl premature CHD
2- Family hx of raised total cholesterol in first or second degree
