Who to screen with lipid panel?

A

Men >= 40, women >= 50 or postmenopausal (consider earlier in SE Asians, First Nations)

or

smoker, DM, HTN, Fam hx premature CVD/hyperlipidemia, ED, CKD, inflammatory disease, HIV, COPD, atherosclerosis/AAA, BMI > 27

A

FRS <5%: Q3-5 years

FRS >= 5%: Q1 year

Other lipid-lowering drugs

A
  • ezetemibe: inhibits cholesterol absorption, may add on to statin, check LFT’s more freq
  • fibrates: fenofibrate (Lipidil), best to lower TG. May add on to statin but watch for myopathies
  • niacin: raises HDL
  • cholesterol binders & resins: cholestyramine, may add on to statin. Do not use if high TG
