Q

what happens during the reaction for a phospholipids to form ?

A
  • a condenstaion reaction occurs
  • between an OH group on a phosphoric acid molecule (H3PO4)
+ - one of the 3 -OH groups on the glycerol forms an ester bond

Q

how does the phosphate group react to water ?

A
  • has a negative charge
–> making it polar (attracted to water )

12
Q

what do phospholipids form and how ?

A
  • form a layer on the surface of water - with heads in the water
    +
  • tails sticking up out of the water
  • they may form micelles
( tiny balls with tails tucked away inside + heads pointing outwards into the water )

16
Q

what is the percentage of membranes in plant and animal cells are made of phospholipids ?

A

-between 20 to 80 %

17
Q

what do bacterial membranes tend to contain ?

A

a greater proportion of protein

18
Q

what are individual phospholipids allowed to do but may not …?

A
  • are free to move around in their layer
  • but won’t move into any position where their hydrophobic ails are exposed to water
  • which gives the membrane some stability
19
Q

draw a micelle

A

found in textbook :)

20
Q

draw a bilayer

A

found in textbook :)

21
Q

what is the membrane described as ?

A

selectively permeable

22
Q

what is possible to move through the tails and why is this important ?

A
  • it s only possible for small and non polar molecules to move through the tails in the bilayer ( such as oxygen and carbon dioxide )
  • this lets the membrane control what goes in and out of the cell , and keeps it functioning properly
23
Q

what is cholesterol ?

A

a steroid alcohol

24
Q

what is cholesterol not made of but is ?

A
  • fatty acids and glycerol
  • a LIPID
25
what does cholesterol consist of ?
- 4 - carbon based rings OR iosprene units
26
what is cholesterol and this means that ..?
- small and hydrophobic molecule --> means that it can sit in the middle of the hydrophobic part of the bilayer
27
what is the function of cholesterol within the membrane ?
- regulates the fluid of the membrane , preventing it from becoming too fluid or stiff
28
where is cholesterol made ?
in the liver in animals
29
what do plants also have and what is called and how it different from cholesterol ?
sigmasterol - it is different from cholesterol in only one respect --> it has a double bond between carbon 22 and carbon 23
30
what is made from cholesterol ?
steroid hormones oestrogen , testosterone and vitamin D
31
why are they made from cholesterol ?
- as they are small and hydrophobic --> they can pass through the hydrophobic part of the cell membrne and any other membrane inside the cell
32
what are steroids abundant in ?
plants
33
what is digitalis and what is it made from ?
- cardiac poison and made from steroids
34
what are lipoproteins
transport systems for lipids in the blood, helping with cholesterol balance and lipid metabolism
35
what is low density lipoproteins ?
known as "bad cholesterol." they transport cholesterol to the cells. too many LDLs can lead to fatty deposits in arteries (atherosclerosis).
36
what is high density lipoproteins ?
known as "good cholesterol." they collect excess cholesterol from the blood and take it back to the liver for disposal
