Lipids Flashcards
Why are Lipids insoluble in water?
They are mostly non-polar
What are the components of triglycerides?
Glycerol backbone + 3 fatty acids chains
How do phospholipids differ from triglycerides?
They have 2 fatty acids + a phosphate group instead of 3 fatty acids
Why are lipids not considered polymers?
They are not made of repeating monomer units like proteins or carbohydrates.
Why are lipids insoluble in water?
They are non-polar and hydrophobic.
Differentiate between saturated, unsaturated, cis, and trans fats.
Saturated: No double bonds, solid at room temp.
• Unsaturated: At least one double bond, liquid at room temp.
• Cis: Naturally occurring, bent shape.
• Trans: Artificial, straight shape, unhealthy.
How do triglycerides and phospholipids differ?
Phospholipids have a phosphate group instead of a third fatty acid.
How do phospholipids behave in water?
They form a bilayer with hydrophilic heads (polar) facing water and hydrophobic tails inward.(non-polar)
How would you respond to someone saying “fats are bad for you”?
Some fats (unsaturated, omega-3) are essential for health.
What is the bond between glycerol and fatty acids called?
Ester linkage
What are phospholipids composed of?
Glycerol backbone, phosphate group, nitrogen group, and two fatty acid chains
What are some uses of waxes in plants and animals?
Waterproofing, protection, and preventing water loss.
