Carbohydrates Flashcards
What is the function of carbohydrates?
Energy storage, structural support, and cell communication
What is the difference between monosaccharides, disaccharide, and polysaccharides?
Monosaccharides = 1 sugar
Disaccharide = 2 sugar
Polysaccharides = many sugar
What type of linkage connects glucose molecules in starch?
A 1-4 glycosidic linkage
What is the generic chemical formula for monosaccharides?
C(6)H(12)O(6)
What is the difference between a- and ß-glucose?
They differ in the position of the hydroxyl (-OH) group on carbon 1.
What are polysaccharides, and how are they formed?
Long chains of monosaccharides linked by glycosidic bonds.
How do carbohydrates demonstrate that structure determines function?
Starch (a-linkages) is digestible; cellulose (B-linkages) is not.
