Lipids Flashcards
what do lipids contain
-oxygen
-carbon
-hydrogen
Lipids are non polar meaning
-they are insoluble in water and dissolve organic solvents such as propanone and alcohols
Saturated means
-if a hydrocarbon chain has only single bonds between the carbon-carbon bonds
Fatty acid chain
-straight zig zag that remains semi-solid at body temp and is useful storage for mammals
What do animal lipids normally contain
-saturated fatty acids
Unsaturated means
- if any carbon-carbon bond is not a single bond
What are unsaturated lipids
-oils that remain liquid at room temperature
Plant lipids
-mostly unsaturated
-olive oil, sunflower oil
If only one double bond between a carbon-carbon what it is called
-monounsaturated
Many carbon-carbon double bonds is
-polyunsaturated
Functions of triglycerides
-energy reserves
-thermal insulation
-protection
-producing metabolic water
Roles of phospholipids
-structure
-electrical insulation
Energy reserves
-in both animals and plants because lipids contain more carbon-hydrogen bonds than carbohydrates
Thermal insulation
-stored under skin, lipids insulate against heat loss in cold or gain when hot
Protection
-fat often stored around delicate organs such as kidneys
