Disaccharides Flashcards
How is a disaccharide formed?
-two monosaccharides bonded together with a 1-4 glycosidic bond and the elimination of water (condensation)
How is maltose made
Glucose + Glucose
What is maltose used in
the germination of seeds
How is sucrose made
Glucose + Fructose
What is sucrose used for
transport in phloem of flowering plants
How is lactose made
Glucose + Galactose
What is lactose used in
it is in mammal milk
Testing for sugars practical
-equal vol of benedicts reagent heated to 70 degrees
-if a reducing sugar is present there will be a colour change from blue-green-yellow-orange and finally brick red
Sucrose is a
non reducing sugar
If sucrose was tested for being a reducing sugar what would happen?
-negative results and would stay blue
How to test for sucrose
-sucrose can only be detected by being heated with HCL
-benedicts is mixed with alkali and heated if the solution turns red then there was a non-reducing sugar present before
Sucrose is an enzyme that
-hydrolyses sucrose into glucose and fructose
