Lipids Flashcards
Properties of Tryglycerides
-> low mass to energy - provides more energy than carbs
-> insoluble in water - doesn’t dissolve in water - doesn’t affect water potential
-> High hydrogen to oxygen - good storage of water
Roles of Lipids
1.) Energy - Better energy source than carbohydrates
2.) Insulation - Conduct heat slowly
3.) Buoyancy
4.) Waterproofing - insoluble in water, waterproof cells.
5.) Protection - Protect the organs
6.) Cell Membrane - phospholipids help maintain the cell
What is a fatty acid?
Hydrocarbon chain, ending in an acid from carboxyl group
What is a fatty acid?
Hydrocarbon chain, ending in an acid from carboxyl group
2 groups of lipids
-> Tryglycerides
-> Phospholipids
Properties of unsaturated fats
-> Double bonds -> one double bond = monosaturated, more than one double bond = polysaturated
Properties of phospholipid
-> has 2 fatty acids and a phosphate head
Properties of saturated fats
1 carbon has 4 other carbons attached - single bonds - Straight chain
Two forms of lipids
fat = solid
oil = liquid
