Lipid Catabolism Flashcards
Breakdown fatty acids process
Beta-oxidation
Energy storage locations
Adipose Protein Glycogen (muscle) Glycogen (liver) Glucose
Beta-oxidation location
Mitochondria in eukaryotes
Enzymes for fatty acid into mitochondria
Carnitine transferase 1, translocase, carnitine transferase 2
Short fatty acids into mitochondria
Imported then attached to CoA
Long fatty acids into mitochondria
Use carnitine system
Activated outside, transported, reactivated
ETF
Electron transfer flavoprotein: accepts electrons from other flavoproteins
Electrons from the reduced flavin pass into the ETC
Enegetics of beta-oxidation
Adds FADH2 and NADH to TCA cycle
100 ATP yield
Ketone bodies
Produced in liver (matrix mitochondria)
Rapidly mobilized fuel sources
Ketogenesis
Forms ketone bodies
by products: acetone, acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate
Steps ketogenesis
1: condensation of acetyl-CoA form acetoacetyl-CoA catalyzed by thiolase
2: add additional molecule of acetyl-CoA to produce HMG-CoA
3: HMG-CoA converted to acetoacetate by HMG-CoA lyase
4: acetoacetate further reduced by action of beta- hydroxy butyrate dehydrogenase
Enzymes of ketogenesis
Thiolase, HMG-CoA lyase, beta-hydroxy butyrate dehydrogenase
Odd number of carbons product
Succinyl-CoA
Enzymes beta-oxidation
Acyl- CoA dehydrogenase, enoyl-CoA hydrase, L-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase, thiolase
