Q

Key Steps of the Link Reaction

A
  • Pyruvate is dehydrogenated and decarboxylated by enzymes forming acetate and CO2 (NAD reduced to NADH)
  • Catalysed by pyruvate dehydrogenase
  • NAD receives 2 H atoms
  • Acetate molecule is formed
  • Combined with coenzyme A forming acetyl coenzyme A

Q

What are the products of Link reaction?

A

FOR EACH PYRUVATE MOLECULE (so multiply by 2 for the whole process from1 glucose)
Acetyl coenzyme A
CO2
NADH

Q

What is the role of coenzyme A?

A

Not used up
Nucleoside and a vitamin
Binds to acetate forming Acetyl CoA
Then feeds acetyl group to Kreb’s cycle, used for aerobic respiration
