Link Reaction Flashcards
1
Q
Where does the Link Reaction Occur?
A
Mitochondrial matrix
2
Q
Key Steps of the Link Reaction
A
- Pyruvate is dehydrogenated and decarboxylated by enzymes forming acetate and CO2 (NAD reduced to NADH)
- Catalysed by pyruvate dehydrogenase
- NAD receives 2 H atoms
- Acetate molecule is formed
- Combined with coenzyme A forming acetyl coenzyme A
3
Q
What are the products of Link reaction?
A
FOR EACH PYRUVATE MOLECULE (so multiply by 2 for the whole process from1 glucose)
Acetyl coenzyme A
CO2
NADH
4
Q
What is the role of coenzyme A?
A
Not used up
Nucleoside and a vitamin
Binds to acetate forming Acetyl CoA
Then feeds acetyl group to Kreb’s cycle, used for aerobic respiration
