Lines / Drains / Tubes Flashcards
what are some things to remember when it comes to managing lines/tubes?
- leave the room as you found it
- break it? admit it
- can’t fix it? call someone who can
chest tube mobility precaution
keep below level of chest and do not tip over
lumbar drain mobility precaution
needs to be clamped prior to mobility
urinary catheter (golden purse) mobility precaution
keep bag below level of bladder
clip tube to walkers or AD or something to always bring with patient
for blood pressure, do NOT take it on the side of…
lymphedema
AV fistula or graft
blood clot
ipsilateral mastectomy
same limb with arterial line or PICC
what is an arterial line?
direct/continuous monitoring of BP and MAP
- it’s position can affect a BP reading
- placement is either radial or femoral
what is a central venous catheter
measures central venous pressure via transducer
used as a guide to overall fluid imbalance
placement is subclavian or internal jugular veins
what is a chest tube
removes and prevents reentry of air or fluid from pleural or mediastinal space
maintains or restores negative intrapleural pressure
used to treat pneumothorax, hemothorax, pleural effusions, empyema
what is a lumbar drain
drainage of CSF from subarachnoid space in lumbar spine
treatment of CSF leaks/dural tears and/or reduce CSF pressure
what is a nasogastric tube
gastric decompression
keeps stomach empty after surgery
rests bowls by limiting passage of gastric contents
what is a Dobhoff tube
placed for enteral feedings when patients are unable to take in adequate amount of nutrition for mouth
what is the aspiration precaution for a Dobhoff tube?
keep HOB elevated and sit upright for one hour after a tube feeding
what is an ateriovenous fistula or graft
access for long-term hemodialysis
surgical graft between artery vein to allow for blood flow to dialysis machine and return to venous circulation
what is the precaution for an ateriovenous fistula or graft
no BP taken in this extremity
