what is regional anesthesia?
site specific for UE, LE, or lower abdomen
what is spinal regional anesthesia used for?
can be injected in the subarachnoid space between the L3, L4, or L5 interspace
can be epidural (thoracic or lumbar region)
peripheral nerve blocks
- temporary numbness and muscle relaxation
what is general anesthesia?
reversible state of consciousness consisting of amnesia, inhibition of noxious reflexes, analgesia, and muscle relaxation
what is the first phase of general anesthesia?
induction - through IV meds
propofol is most common
what is the second phase of general anesthesia?
maintenance
volatile gases - servoflurane, desflurane, nitrous oxide
what is the third phase of general anesthesia?
emergence
autonomic hyper-responsiveness
may result in HTN, tachycardia, broncho/laryngospasms
can be blunted with short acting narcotics, beta blockers, lidocaine
