The ‘penates’ are little statues of the Household Gods. ‘Patrios’ - They have been in the family a long time. They represent the Piety, and so the safety, of the whole House.

It is ethically wrong for me to handle the penates … a specific aspect of Pietas here is that it is wrong to come from killing to handling these religious objects before cleansing has happened.

The water has to be ‘living’ or ‘running’ to cleanse the soul of the person in the right way. With everything going on in Troy at the moment, Aeneas still bothers to get these things right.
