Limbic System & Emotion Flashcards
structures that compose the limbic system
neocrotex cingulate gyrus hippocampus hypothalamus thalamus amygdala
Input into Papez’s circuit
Sensory info input into the amygdala (if info has strong emotional content, our emotional response will be encoded in the amygdala)
Output from Papez’s circuit
emotional expression through the hypothalamus (autonomic control - HR, crying)
Role of the neocortex in Papez’s circuit
Evaluation what’s happening in the moment using previous experiences/memory
Aside from an ANS, and emotional responses, what other type of response does the amygdala facilitate
Signals to the periaqueductal grey (PAG) which elicits a behavioural response
Function of the amygdala in emotion
Processes sensory information & applies an emotional experience to it
Important in emotional memory
Important in fear & aggression
