Limbic System Flashcards
What is the Papez Circuit?
Hippocampus via the fornix –>mammilarybodies via mammillohalamic tract ->anterior nucleus of the thalamus –>cingulate and parahippocampal gyri –>
What dose the hippocampus do?
It is related to factual learning and memory (declarative memory).
What is Korsakoff’s psychosis?
a memory deficit following damage to the mammillary bodies as a result of chronic alcoholism
How is the hippocampal formaion connected to the cerebral cortex?
via the cingulate and parahippocampal gyri
what is the most prominent source of inputs to the hippocampus?
the adjacent enorhinal cortex
how si the hippocampus interconnected with the septal area and hypothalamus?
via the fornix, the major output pathway from the hippocampal formation
What is the amygdala?
It is a collection of nuclei located in the temporal lobe beneath the uncus. Prominently inovled in emotional processing
How do fibers exit the amygdala?
the stria terminalis which distributes fibers to the septal area and hypothalamus and the ventral amydalofugal pathway which ends in the septal area, hypothalamus and olfactory regions as well as the prefrontal cortex. outputs from the amygdala relay in the dorsomedal nucleus of the thalamus and influence prefrontal and orbital frontal cortex
What is Kluver-Bucy Syndrome?
removal of the temporal love to the level of the primary auditory cortex (results in loss of amygdala, parahippocampal gyrus, hippocampal formation).
Animals were fearless and placid, were hypersexual, responded to objects by sniffing and oral examination, examed objects incessantly but recognized nothing.
