Lighting and Irrigation Design Flashcards
Best lighting fixtures for small residential
Low-level landscape lights
Best lighting fixtures for pedestrian spaces
Intermediate height landscape lights
A quantitative unit of measurement referring to the total amount of light energy emitted by a light source, without regard to the direction or its distribution
Lumen
Lumen
A quantitative unit of measurement referring to the total amount of light energy emitted by a light source, without regard to the direction or its distribution
A US unit of measurement referring to incident lighting. Can be derived from lumens or candelas.
Foot candles
1fc = 1 lumen/sq.ft
Foot candles
A US unit of measurement referring to incident lighting. Can be derived from lumens or candelas.
The unit of intensity of a light source in a specific direction. When directed perpendicularly to a surface, 1 foot away, generates 1 foot candle of light
Candlepower / Candela
Candlepower / Candela
The unit of intensity of a light source in a specific direction. When directed perpendicularly to a surface, 1 foot away, generates 1 foot candle of light
Light, leaving a surface, whether due to the surface is reflectance, or because it is the surface of a light emitting object (like a lightbulb). The measurable form of brightness, which is a subjective sensation.
Luminance
Luminance
Light, leaving a surface, whether due to the surface is reflectance, or because it is the surface of a light emitting object (like a lightbulb). The measurable form of brightness, which is a subjective sensation.
Efficacy
A measure of how effectively a lamp converts electric power into light energy, without regard to the effectiveness of its illumination.
Lighting strategies to reduce vandalism at a residential property
Light the facade
Light the front door
Term to describe light leaving a surface, whether due to the surface reflectance, or because it is the surface of a light-emitting object (like a light bulb). This is the measurable form of brightness
Luminance
Term for a measurements referring to incident light and can be derived from lumens
Footcandle
Three main types of irrigation emission devices
rotor, spray and drip
The primary purpose of this piece of the irrigation system is to protect the system from a line break by shutting off the water to the irrigation system when none of the zone valves are operating.
master valve
an automatic valve that is installed at the point where the irrigation system connects to the water supply (after the backflow preventer)
master valve
Valves which are typically manually operated devices, placed at critical junctures along the irrigation mainline.
Isolation valves
Valves communicate with the irrigation controller to regulate the flow of water within a specific irrigation zone.
Control valves
What are quick coupler valves used for in an irrigation system
quick coupler valves can be used to connect a hose to the irrigation system, thereby providing maintenance workers with access to water in the landscape.

Isolation Valve
Three basic objectives of landscape lighting
safety, security, aesthetics
What does a transformer do
Transformers change the voltage from the main power source to supply a lighting fixture with either a lower or a higher voltage. Typically, they are used to convert 120V “line” voltage for use in a 12V (or 24V) low-voltage system.
