Lighting Flashcards
What are the three lights used in three-point lighting, and how are they positioned?
- Key light: The brightest light source, directed at the subject from the front.
- Fill light: Positioned opposite the key light (in regards to the camera) to reduce shadows without flooding the scene with too much light.
- Backlight: Used to separate the subject from the background. Positioned behind the subject.
What is motivated lighting, and how does it enhance the scene?
Motivated lighting creates the illusion that a light source is hitting the subject from behind, enhancing depth and realism. It ensures that the back and motivated light have the same color temperature to avoid viewer confusion.
When filming with a single light source, where should the camera be positioned in relation to the light source?
The camera should be positioned on the shadow side, opposite the single light source.
How is Rembrandt lighting achieved, and what effect does it create?
Rembrandt lighting is achieved by placing the key light at a 45-degree angle from the camera, creating a small triangle of light on the subject’s cheek.
How can you create depth with lighting in a shot?
Depth can be achieved by using complementary colors between your subject and background. Additionally, using a darker background than the subject or vice versa can help the subject pop.
Why is it important to have a light source in the background?
Having a light source in the background prevents the subject from looking like they are on a stage and adds depth to the scene.
When is the ideal time to shoot to avoid unwanted shadows, and why?
The golden hour, during sunrise or sunset, is ideal for shooting to avoid unwanted shadows (especially on the face and eyes) caused by the sun being directly overhead.
What is eye light, and what effect does it have on the subject?
Eye light is the reflection of a light source in the subject’s eyes, giving them life and depth. When the light is missing the subject seems without a soul and lifeless.
How can fog enhance the cinematic feel of a shot?
Fog can add texture and atmosphere to shots, creating a cinematic feel and enhancing the mood of the scene.
