Light and optics Flashcards
An image formed by a plane mirror is
upright, vertual, laterally inverted and the same size as the object
Shapes of the mirrors
Plane- flat
concave-bends inwards
convex-bends outwards
reflection of light
plane-parallel light rays are reflected in parallel
concave-parallel light rays are reflected inwards and converge
convex-Parallel light rays are reflected outwards and diverge
Size of image
plane-the image is the zame size of the object
concave-size of the image is larger than the object
convex-size is smaller than object
What is a periscope?
it is used to see things that are otherwise out of sight using the concept of reflection of light
What are the characteristics of a periscope?
-two place mirrors and are parallel at 45 degrees
What is a kaleidoscope?
consists of a tube made of several plane mirros
What are the characteristics of a kaleidoscope?
is a cylindrical shaped tube that creates patterns
state the properties of light
Light travels in straight lines
Light travels faster than sound
Light can be dispersed by water droplets in the sky
Examples of light that travels in a straight line
Sunlight travels in straight lines
Umbrella is an opaque object, therefore sunlight cannot pass through it
When light is blocked by an opaque object, a shadow is formed behind the opaque object
reflection of light
Reflection of light is when your image bounces off the plane mirror.
What is the law of reflection of light?
The incident ray,the reflected ray and the normal to the surface of the mirror all lie in the same place
What are the characteristics of image formed on plane mirror
virtual(cannot be formed on the screen but behind the mirror),laterally inverted(mirrors turns the image arond from left to right),same size, upright
