Air Flashcards
what is inert gas?
inert gas is chemically stable and non reactive.
State the importance of Oxygen.
Respiration
Combustion of rocket engine a high altitude
Welding and steel cutting
Preparation of various compound
State the importance of CO2
Photosynthesis
Production of carbonated drinks
Fire extinguisher
Carbon cycle
State the importance of Nitrogen
Production of nitric acid and ammonia
Nitrogen cycle
Liquid nitrogen as cooling agent
What does Photosynthesis do in the CO2 cycle?
Green plants use CO2 and sunlight to create their own food which makes carbon part of the plant.
State the importance of Inert Gas
Helium is used to fill hot air balloons
Neon gas is used in advertising lights
Argon gas is used in light bulbs
What does Combustion do in the CO2 cycle?
When humans burn fossil fuels like coal and oil, most of the carbon quickly enters the atmosphere as CO2
What does Respiration do in the CO2 cycle?
most of the carbon is exhaled as CO2 during respiration
What does Decomposition do in the CO2 cycle?
Whne animals or plants die, they decopose by microbes like bacteria and fungi which releases CO2 into the air.
What is the use of O2 cycle?
It is required for processes like rusting, decoposition, combustion and respiration which is produced in photosynthesis
What is the use of O2 cycle? (second example)
Co2 released from these processes is used in photosynthesis
Ways to reduce problems of interferences to the oxygen and carbon cycle
Prohibit illegal loging
Avoid using excessive pesticides
Reforestation
Prevent excessive release of smoke from vehicles
Do not burn forests
Interferences in CO2 and O2 cycle.
-global warmig
-illegal logging
-deforestration
-burning fossil fuels
-increase of CO2
-green lungs
What is combustion?
it is a chemical reaction between a substance and oxygen to produce CO2,heat and light
Three conditions of combustion
-Heat
-Fuel
-Oxygen
What is the use of oxygen in combustion?
Enough oxygen to sustain combustion
What is the use of fuel in combustion?
Fuels are combustion materials
What is the use of heat in combustion?
Enough heat is used to raise materials to its ignition temperature
Types of fire extinguisher for different sources of fire
Solid,Liquid,Gas and Metal
Solid..
Example of material
-wood cloth,paper
Type of fire extinguisher
-dry powder,water
Liquid
Example of material
-oil,varnish,paint
Type of fire extinguisher
-foam,CO2,dry powder
Gas
Example of material
-Propane, acetylene
Type of fire extinguisher
-Foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide
Metal
Example of material
-Potassium, sodiumm, magnesium
Type of fire extinguisher
-dry powder,dry sand
What is starving
Removing of fuels or combustible materials
What is smothering
Cutting off the supply of oxygen by covering the surface of fuel with fire blanket, wet sack
What is cooling?
Cooling surface of burning materials by spraying water or a layer of carbon dioxide
Safety measures to prevent the occurence of fire:
-Keep away flammable substances from fire
-Always be aware of your electrical appliances
-Do not plug in too many electrical appliances to a single electrical source
-Install fire alarm and smoke detector at home
-Do not throw away cigaratte butts when they are still burning
-Keep matches and lighters in a safe place
What is air pollution?
Air pollution is a situation which involves the presence of any pollutants in the air
Sources such as Open burning,Cigarettes,Forest fires
Can cause pollutants such as Dust, soot, smoke
Sources such as Construction sites,Asbestos factories,Limestone quarries
Can cause pollutants such as Dust and soot
Agriculture and plantation activities
Can cause pollutants such as Aerosol spray, chemical fertilisers
Airconditioners,Refrigerators,Aerosol sprays,Electronic factories
Can cause pollutants such as Aerosol spray, chemical fertilisers
Nuclear power plants
Can cause pollutants such as Radioactive materials
Exhaust of vehicles,Factories
Can cause pollutants such as Smoke, soot, dust, carbon monoxide
