Light Flashcards
Light
Energy we can see. White light is a mixture of all the colors of the rainbow.
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. (ROY G. BIV - is one way to remember it)
Opaque
(pronounced oh-pake) a characteristic of substances in which no light can pass through.
A solid, wood door is opaque; we can’t see through it.
Translucent
a characteristic of a substance in which some light will pass through.
Wax paper is translucent; you can see some shapes through it, but it isn’t clear.
Transparent
a characteristic of a substance in which all light passes through.
A glass window pane is transparent; you can see details clearly through it.
Reflect / reflection
The behavior of light in which the light bounces off a surface.
Mirrors, calm water, and tinted windows all reflect light. We can see ourselves in them.
Refract / Refraction
The behavior of light in which the light bends as it travels from one form of matter through another.
When light is refracted in a glass of water our straw can appear bent or broken even though it is not.
Absorb
To soak up and hold.
Light is absorbed in most substances, we see only the colors that are reflected.
Transmit
to send out or forward.
Light is transmitted from its source. The sun, a light bulb, and a computer screen all transmit light.
