Ligaments/Soft Tissues Flashcards
C: Transverse ligament
Divides the ring of the atlas into two
Compartments are the anterior dens and the posterior spinal cord
C: Alar ligament
Attached either side of the dens
Attached to the medial side of the occiput
Relaxed in extension and taut in flexion
Prevents distraction of C1 and C2
C: Apical ligament
From the apex of the dens to the foramen magnum
C: Tectorial membrane
Covers odontoid process and its ligaments
It’s continuous with the posterior longitudinal ligament which is found on the internal surface of intervertebral canal
Arises from the surface of the axis attaches to the groove of the occipital bone
T/L: Posterior longitudinal ligament
Long
Runs posterior to vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs
Extends from back of sacrum and gradually broadens
T/L: Anterior longitudinal ligament
Runs down anterior surface of spine, all vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs on ventral side
T/L: Ligamentum flavum
Short but thick ligament
Connects lamina over adjacent vertebrae
Preserves upright posture and assists vertebral column in resuming shape after flexion
T/L: Thoracolumbar fascia
Posterior layer - superficial transverse processes erector spinae and attached to spinous processes
Middle layer - between erector spinae and quadratus lumborum attached to transverse tips
Anterior - deep to quadratus lumborum, attached to anterior of transverse processes
T/L: Rectus sheath
Anterolateral abdominal wall
Anterior layer - EO & IO
Posterior layer - IO & TA
Layers interlace at midline - linea Alba
L: Interspinous ligament
Connects spinous processes of adjacent vertebrae
L: supraspinous ligament
Connects tips of adjacent spinous processes
