undercurving fibrous band spanning btw ASIS and pubic tubercle
inguinal ligament
reinforces the hop joint anteriorly and superiorly. Y-shaped attaching to AIIS, and acetabular rim. prevents hyperextension of the hip during standing by screwing femoral head in acetabulum
iliofemoral ligament
supports hip joint posteriorly. weak. arises from ischial part of acetabular rim and spirals to neck of femur
ischiofemoral ligament
supports hip joint inferiorly and anteriorly arising from obturator crest to merge with fibrous layer of joint capsule. blends with the iliofemoral ligament and tightens during extension and abduction. resists excessive abduction
pubofemoral ligament
deep fascia of the thigh articulating with inginal ligament, pubic arch, body of pubis, iliac crest, sacrum, coccyx, sacrotuberous ligament, ischial tuberosity and superfical aspect of bones.
fascia lata
broad band of fibers extending from iliac tubercle to anterolateral tibial tubercle. aponeurosis of TFL and gluteus max
iliotibial (IT) band
connects quadricepts to anterior portion of patella and is continuous with patellar ligament
quadriceps tendon
crosses the patella. transmits the draw of the quad femoris using patella as an angle that increases leverage
patellar ligament
insertion of sartorius, gracilis, semitendinosus
pes anserinus
strong, flat band extending from medial epicondyle of femur to medial epicondyle and superior surface of tibia. deep fibers are firmly attached to medial meniscus
tibal collateral ligament or medial collateral ligament (MCL)
rounded and cord-like. STRONG. extends inferiorly from lateral epicondyle of femur to lateral head of fibula. splits tendon of biceps femoris
fibular collateral ligament or lateral collateral ligament (LCL)
crescentric plates of fibrocartiliage playing a role in shock absorption.

knee joint cavity extends deep to vastus intermedius as this.
suprapatellar bursa
weaker cruciate ligament. arising from anterior intercondylar area of tibia. extends superiorly, posteriorly, and laterally to attach posterior part of lateral condyle of femur. limits posterior rolling and converts the bones to spin. prevents posterior displacement of femur on the tibia and hyperextension of knee joint
ACL (anterior cruciate ligament)
strong, arising from posterior intercondylar area of tibia. limits anterior rolling of femur on the tibial plateau during extension converting it to a spin. prevents anterior displacement of femur and helps prevent hyperflexion of the knee joint
PCL posterior cruciate ligament
reflected expansion of tendon of semimebranosus strengthening joint capsule posteriorly. arises posterior to medialtibial condyle and passes superolaterally attaching central part of posterior aspect of joint capsule
oblique popliteal ligament
arises from posterior aspect of fibular head, passing superomedially over tendon of popliteus spreading over posterior knee joint
arcuate popliteal ligament
retracts suprapatellar bursa and elevation of articular capsule of knee joint during extension
articularis genu muscle
connects shafts of tibia and fibula
interrosseous membrane
reinforces the lateral portion of ankle joint consisting of anterior and posterior talofibular ligaments and calcaneofibular ligament
lateral ligament
hinge type synovial located btw distal ends of tibia and fibula and superior talus
talocrural joint (ankle)
occurs where talus rests on and articulates with the calcaneous. synovial joint surounded by weak joint capsule supported by talocalcaneal ligaments
subtalar joint
compound joint formed by talonavicular part of talocalcaneonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints
** transection across this joint is a standard method for surgical amputation of the foot
transverse tarsal joint
condyloid synovial joint. actions= flexion, extension, some abduction, adduction and circumduction. has collateral and plantar ligaments
metatarsophalangeal joint
hinge synovial type of joint. actions are flexion and extension. collateral and plantar ligaments
interphalangeal joint
supports head of talus and plays important role in weight transfer from talus and maintaining longitudinal arch of foot
plantar calcaneonavicular (spring) ligament
important in maintaining longitudinal arch of foot. some fibers of this ligament form a tunnel for tendon of fibularis longus
long plantar ligament
deep to long plantar ligament. involved in maintaining arch
plantar calcaneocuboid (short) ligament
