Q

lifting considerations

what are the 3 equations for work and power

1 work, 2 power

A

work = force x distance
power = work/time
or
power = force x velocity

to produce a higher power time needs to be smaller/shorter

load and torque definitions

A

load = a force that acts on the body
torque = a force that rotates a body orsegment around an axis of rotation

Q

lifting considerations

talk about squat lift

A

uniform flexion of hips and knees
dorsiflexion at the ankles
moment arm @ hips would be greater if it wasnt for flexed knees
requires less torque from hip muscles due to flexed knees

Q

lifting considerations

talk about stoop lift

A

more hip flexion less knee flexion
> moment arm between object being lifting and force of gravity
more toque @ hip muscles
see this lift with lighter loads
patient population seen with knee pathologies
there is regional interdependence on knee shift to the hips
concurrent lumbar movement into flexion with hips

Q

lifting considerations

talk about golfers lift

A

lift used for very small loads
> torque requirement
alot of uniolateral hip stabilty
allows more isolated hip flexion with limited lumbar flexion - this is due to rotation @ the femroacetabular joint

Q

lifting considerations

talk about power lift

A

each lower extremity is put in a differnet length tension
allows load to be closer to AOR @ hips
decreases moment arm, decreased required torque

Q

lifting considerations

list the 6 general rules for lifting

A
  1. decrease the amout of external load
  2. decrease velocity of the lift (F=ma)
  3. minimize twisting (torsional force)
  4. decrease distance of the laod to center of mass (external moment arm)
  5. increase muscle strength (internal moment)
  6. seek assistance
