Lift Flashcards
What is lift?
Phenomenon generated by an aerofoil due to pressure differences above and below the aerofoil.
The aerofoil is cambered on top and flat below, causing a difference in speed and thus a pressure differential
What is the equation for lift?
Lift = 1/2 Air Density x the Velocity squared x Wing Area x Co-efficient of lift
What is the co-efficient of lift?
Lifting ability of a particular wing, it depends on shape and angle of attack
Describe the centre of pressure?
Single point acting on a wing chord line at right angle to relative force, where the lifting force is produced
What happens with the centre of pressure with movement of AoA?
It moves, the greater the AoA, the closer the centre of pressure is to the leading edge
Describe Aspect Ratio?
Ratio of the wings span to the geometric chord
What are the high lift devices?
Trailing Edge Flaps (Fowler Flaps)
Leading Edge Flaps (Krueger Flaps/ Slats)
Slots
What do slotsdo to increase lift?
Delay separation of the boundary layer by re-energising the airflow
What do Leading Edge Flaps do to increase lift?
Increase lift by creating a longer chord line, camber, and area
