Instability Flashcards
What is Dutch Roll?
Oscillatory instability with swept wing aircraft
It is the combination of yaw and rolling motions. When an aircraft yaws, it will develop into a roll. As one side of the wing is travelling faster it will get more lift, causing roll.
What is the recovery from a Dutch roll?
Opposite aileron
How do prevent Dutch Roll?
Yaw Dampers
What is spiral stability?
Tendency of an aircraft in a properly banked turn to return to a laterally level flight attitude at release of ailerons (Airbus doesn’t have this as its fly by wire)
What is lateral stability?
Tendency of an aircraft to return to a level position after a side slip.
What is longitudinal stability?
Tendency of an aircraft to return to a stable pitch position after a disturbance
What happens to stability at higher altitudes?
Stability reduces due to less aerodynamic damping (except spiral stability)
