Instability Flashcards

1
Q

What is Dutch Roll?

A

Oscillatory instability with swept wing aircraft
It is the combination of yaw and rolling motions. When an aircraft yaws, it will develop into a roll. As one side of the wing is travelling faster it will get more lift, causing roll.

Q

What is spiral stability?

A

Tendency of an aircraft in a properly banked turn to return to a laterally level flight attitude at release of ailerons (Airbus doesn’t have this as its fly by wire)

Q

What happens to stability at higher altitudes?

A

Stability reduces due to less aerodynamic damping (except spiral stability)
