Forces/ Aerofoil Flashcards
What are the 4 forces acting on an aircraft in flight?
Drag, Thrust, Lift, Weight
What produces maximum glide range?
Vmd (Max lift to drag ratio)
What is the effect of weight on maximum gliding range?
Glide range does not vary with weight.
Because glide range is proportional to lift-drag ratio. It will fly faster though.
What is the effect of weight on maximum gliding endurance?
Glide endurance decreases with increasing weight
It causes a greater ROD, due to the fact it will fly at a higher airspeed for given AoA
What is an aerofoil?
Body that gives large lift compared to it’s drag
Examples include wings, tail planes, rudders, propellers
The Chord line is…
A straight line drawn from leading edge to the trailing edge
Mean Camber line is…
A line drawn from leading edge to trailing edge with equidistance between top and bottom
What is wing washout?
A decrease in the angle of incidence from root to tip, compensating for easy stall due to higher levels of loading at the wing tips
What is Anhedral and Dihedral?
Angle of the wing compared to the fuselage. Dihedral has a positive angle. Anhedral has negative
