Lifesaving Principles Flashcards
What are the 7 life-saving principles?
- Fall Protection
- Zone of Protection
- Confined & Enclosed Spaces
- Trenching & Shoring
- Test Before Touching
- ARC Flash PPE
- Working Within Minimum Approach Distance
Fall Protection
1.1 wear approved fall arrest prior to going aloft
1.2 fall protection must be used when working at elevations of 4’ or higher
Zone of Protection
2.1 when required, employees shall create a zone of protection prior to working on equipment - LOCK OUT TAG OUT FOR LOVE - in accordance with Exelon procedures for Facilities, Gas, Electric
Confined & Enclosed Spaces
3.1 perform atmospheric testing with calibrated meter prior to entering a confined or enclosed space
3.2 when entering a confined or enclosed space always wear a harness or approved rescue device to enable rescue
3.3 attendant(s) must be present for the duration of entry and have rescue equipment set up/on site (excluding substation basement inspections, housekeeping, and readings)
Trenching & Shoring
4.1 trenches or excavations, 5’ or deeper (less if conditions require), shall have shoring in place prior to employee entry
4.2 air monitoring is necessary when excavations are greater than 4’ in depth (where oxygen deficiency or a hazardous atmosphere is suspected)
Test Before Touching
5.1 always test using approved tools, equipment and/or processes before touching equipment or conductors
5.2 always use proper grounding techniques as required
ARC Flash PPE
6.1 wear specific levels of PPE for
(6.2) switching and grounding activities
(6.3) handling energized equipment and cables and
(6.4) installing and removing meters
Note: see PPE matrix for calorie rating and PPE required
Working within Minimum Approach Distance
7.1 do not enter MAD without class appropriate rubber gloves and sleeves as required
7.2 install class appropriate insulating protective devices on equipment or conductors at a difference of potential while working within the MAD
