3 Major Adaptations
Emptying fluid from the lungs, beginning ventilations
Changing circulatory pattern
Maintain body temperature
Newborn Concerns
Nose breathers until about 4-6 weeks old
Lungs fragile, barotrauma possible
Accessory muscles fragile, fatigues easy
Infections cause faster respirations causing loss of heat and fluids
Newborn Birth Adaptations Circulatory
•Pre-delivery
– Umbilical arteries (2) carry deoxygenated blood from fetus to placenta
– Umbilical vein (1) carries oxygenated blood to fetus
– Ductous venus allows blood returning from placenta to bypass liver, empties into IVC
– Foramen ovale and ductous ateriosus allow blood to bypass non-funtioning lungs
