Life Processes Flashcards
How was the cell theory created?
Proposed in 1800s after a microscope was invented and cork was put under it
What are the most important sections if life?
1.The physical organization-cell theory 2. The activities-funds mental processes 3. The chemical make-up- functional biochemistry 4. The evolutionary history-origins
What is the cell theory?
- Life is composed of cells and cell products
- Cell is smallest living unit
- Cells come from pre-existing cells
Why is life cellular?
- Life is characterized by order
- Life can only persist if it remains organized
- Cell allows for entry of essential nutrients
Is there a problem with the cell theory?
Yes. It doesn’t allow for viruses or origins of life
What are the life processes?
Nutrition, respiration, synthesis, excretion, response, homeostasis, growth, reproduction,
What is a cell doing when it makes copies of itself?
Reproduction
What is a cell doing when it neutralizes or gets rid of waste?
Excretion
What is a cell doing when it increases it’s volume?
Growth
What is a cell doing when it manufactures the complex molecules that it needs?
Synthesis
What is a cell doing when it acquires materials from it’s environment?
Nutrition
What is a cell doing when it detects changes and alters it’s actions?
Response
What is a cell doing when it harvests energy from existing molecules?
Respiration
What is a cell doing when it keeps everything in balance in the cell?
Homeostasis
Define Nutrition:
Cells take in what they need from their surroundings
Define Respiration:
Nutrients are broken down to release potential energy
Define Synthesis:
Cells use raw materials acquired through nutrition and energy from respiration to synthesize new substances such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids
Define Excretion:
Substances are turned into unusable products and are neutralized/eliminated
Define response:
Substances in cells that are sensitive to environment changes as well as other substances (especially protein) that can cause changes in the cell, allowing cells to respond
Define Homeostasis:
Healthy cells will stay in a steady state even if the environment changes
