Biodiversity And Classification Flashcards
Where did diversity come from?
- theory that life branches off from common ancestors has existed for 250 years. However, Darwin proposed a credible mechanism for evolution in 1859
- excess offspring are produced and species learn to compete and adapt which slowly changes the ways of the animal
Why study biology?
- 2 million species named, 5-100 million exist
* originally need plant/animal/land knowledge for survival
Who created Archaea, eubacteria, and eukarya?
Daniel Woese
What are modern challenges?
- bacteria can acquire foreign DNA from other bacteria in odd sexual exchanges
- it is possible for bacteria to mix and match genetic programs developed in completely different organisms
- some argue it’s impossible to form an evolutionary bacterial clade and species should not be used when discussing bacteria
Where are prokaryotic cells found?
Eubacteria and archaea
What MUST a prokaryote cell have?
Bacterial chromosome, cell membrane, ribosomes, cell wall
What are optional prokaryote equipment
Polis, bacterial flagellum, plasmid, capsule, mesosome, thylakoids
What do pilus do?
Used to latch into other cells to exchange resources or mate
What do bacterial chromosome do?
Contain DNA
What do ribosomes do?
Contain RNA and protein, enclosed in assembly of proteins
What do capsules do?
The mucopolysaccharide later around the cell wall
What do mesosome do?
A folding of the bacteria cell membrane that is the site of respiration
What do thylakoids do?
Contain chloroplasts
