Q

Where did diversity come from?

A
  • theory that life branches off from common ancestors has existed for 250 years. However, Darwin proposed a credible mechanism for evolution in 1859
  • excess offspring are produced and species learn to compete and adapt which slowly changes the ways of the animal

Q

Why study biology?

A
  • 2 million species named, 5-100 million exist

* originally need plant/animal/land knowledge for survival

Q

What are modern challenges?

A
  • bacteria can acquire foreign DNA from other bacteria in odd sexual exchanges
  • it is possible for bacteria to mix and match genetic programs developed in completely different organisms
  • some argue it’s impossible to form an evolutionary bacterial clade and species should not be used when discussing bacteria
