Life On Earth Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a natural unit in which organisms can interact in an environment
What is a habitat?
Where an organism lives such as a pond, rock pool or soil etc
What is a biome?
A geographical region that is characterized by its climate and can contain many ecosystems.
Give me any examples of land biomes?
Tundra, savanna, and desert
What is a community?
This is the name given to all different populations living in a habitat
What is a producer?
A producer is an organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis
What is a consumer?
A consumer is an animal that eats the the plant or animal (producer)
What is a niche ?
The role an organism has within its ecosystem
What does the arrow represent Ina food chain/web?
It represents the energy flow between the producer and consumers
How much food is lost through heat and movement, and faeces ?
90%
How much food is kept in our bodies when doing exercise and why is this food kept?
10% is kept. This is because we need these left overs for growth and repair
What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the variety and abundance of species in an ecosystem
What is an abiotic factor ?
Abiotic is non living it has to do with sunlight, rainfall, and temperature
What is a biotic factor?
Biotic is when living organisms feed off other organisms
Biological word for animal ?
Organism
What is a population?
Population is the total number of the same species living in a particular habitat
What is a pitfall trap?
A pitfall trap is a trapping pit for small animals, such as insects, amphibians and reptiles.
What is a quadrat? And what is it used for?
typically of one square metre, selected at random to act as samples for assessing the distribution of plants or animals.
What is a quadrat? And what is it used for?
typically one square metre, selected at random to act as samples for assessing the distribution of plants or animals.
What is a species?
It’s a group of organisms which can interbreed to produce fertile offsprings
What are predators and prey?
A predator is an animal that hunts another animal for its food, and prey is the hunted animal
What is competition?
Competition is when two or more members of the community need a particular resource that’s in short supply.
What is intraspecific competition?
This is competition between organisms of the same species. Same species compete more because they need same resources
What is interspecific competition?
This is competition between organisms of different species. Different species compete less because they need different resources
What’s is a light meter?
An instrument for measuring light intensity and moisture in the soil.
What are decomposers? give 2 examples
Decomposers are a group of organisms that obtain their energy by breaking down undigested waste, uneaten remains and dead bodies. Examples are Bacteria and Fungi
