Life Cycle of Moss(Bryophyte) Flashcards
Sporophyte in the Moss is the
Brown, single stalk without leaf
The Sporophyte lives as a…. on the gametophyte
Parasite
The Sporopyhte has…. in its upper end
Capsule
The Sporopyhte has…. in its upper end
Capsule
What does the capsule contain?
Haploid spores
How are haploid spores in the sprophyte capsule made
Meiotic division
When the haploid spores from the sporophyte capsule releases it will grow into
Protonema
What is the protonema
A green, branching filamentous structure
What does the protonema produce and how?
Gametophyte, By Budding
How does gametophyte give rise to sporophytye?
- By Reproduction of antherozoid and ovum,
How does sporophyte gives rise to gametophyte.
- By Asexual reproductions of spores
The Life Cycle of A moss
- Small, green, and leafy is the haploid gametophyte(gamete-bearing plant)
- Sporogonium is the diploid sporophyte(spore-bearing plant)
- Most Cases, Gametophyte is the dominant phase
- When Gametophyte is mature, it develops male and female sex organs at the top of the stem
- The antheridium produces many long, spiral coiled antherozoids
- Antherozoids have 2 flagella.
- After heavy dew/rain, the antherozoid swims through a film of water covering the plant to a nearby flask-shaped female organ called archegonium
- Archegonium has a large ovum at its base.
- The ovum releases a chemical substance that attracts and guides the antherozoid down the neck of the archegonium and into the base.
- The Haploid antherozoid fertilizes the haploid ovum to form a diploid zygote.
