Life after Death Flashcards
Afterlife
Existence after death.
Death
The end of life on earth.
Election
The idea that God chooses where we go in the afterlife.
Heaven
A place of reward. Living with God/in God’s presence. A place of eternal happiness/bliss.
Hell
A place of punishment. Fully separated from God/God’s presence. A place of eternal misery.
Limited election
The view that only a few Christians will be saved.
Purgatory
The Catholic Christian belief of the state after death where people are purified of their sins so as to meet God in heaven.
Resurrection
Coming back to life after death.
Salvation
Being saved, being united with God; being sent to heaven.
Spiritual state
A non-physical state. The suggestion that heaven is a spiritual state, for example, rejects the idea that heaven is a place like London is but accepts the truth of heaven.
Universalist belief
Universalism, i.e. the view that all people will be saved
Unlimited election
The view that all people are called to salvation but not all are saved.
The Sheep and the Goats (Matthew 25:31-46)
Parable told by Jesus to explore the afterlife. It suggests that judgement will be based on people’s actions, not beliefs, and teaches Christians to treat all they encounter as if they were encountering Jesus himself.
