Liberation Theology
A movement in Christianity, most associated with elements of South American Catholicism, that sees the need to take radical approaches to solve poverty and injustice.
Alienation
Marx’s idea that humans are separated from general society when they are dehumanised and unable to live fulfilling lives.
Capitalism
The economic and political system in which society operates in a free market with competition and profit driving it forward, rather than government intervention.
Exploitation
The use of humans as objects and as merely means to an end.
Marginalised
Those on the fringes of society.
Marxism
A sociological and political theory deriving from the ideas of Karl Marx. It views all societies as developing through class struggles until they overthrow capitalism and become communist societies.
Orthodoxy
Official Church teaching; right belief.
Orthopraxis
Right action.
Social sin
Sins performed collectively by society. Times where society as a whole wrongs a person or group of people.
