autoimmune inflammation of heart valves that occurs as part of SLE

A
occurs in 50% of pts w/ lupus
usually occurs simultaneously w/ pericarditis

A
small to medium verrucous, berrylike, or flat vegetations
commonly on multiple valves
most commonly mitral and tricuspid, on either or both sides

A
necrotic debris
fibrinoid material
degenerating leukocytes, fibroblasts hematoxylin bodies

hematoxylin bodies
A
condensed naked nuclei of dead degenerated gells ingested by phagocytes

complications
A
chronic adhesive pericarditis
NOT emboli from the vegetations
