- A liberal democracy is structured to define and restrict authority in order to support legitimate government within an environment of justice and freedom
- There are four critical elements to the framework: legitimacy, justice, freedom, power

Legitimacy
A
- A legitimate government is one that is in possession of the necessary power or authority to rule
- This typically means a high degree of popular support as demonstrated by a free electorate and frequent elections
- It is a government chosen by popular vote to maximise citizens’ well-being

Justice
A
- Justice has been attained when people live in a society where everyone is treated fairly and with respect
- A representative democracy that is restrained by constitutionalism, free elections, and power limitations may experience this

Freedom
A
- Freedom is defined as the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants
- Freedom is the right to choose between options, do things in the interest of the community, and respect political and civil liberties

- Power is limited in a liberal democracy through a written constitution, with checks and balances such as the division of power between Parliament, government, and the judiciary
- A judicial system supports the political system, as well as social norms
- Civil rights are protected from government, institutions, and social forces
