LG 1.3 Plant and Animal Tissues (ANIMAL TISSUES) Flashcards
Under animal tissues, there are 4 units namely:
Epithelial Tissue, Connective Tissue, Muscle Tissue and Nerve Tissue
It is made of thin cells that cover the body, organs, blood vessels and body cavities; They are classified based on the number of layers.
Epithelial Tissue
It is composed of cells that vary widely in form and function; it supports body and form more.
Connective Tissue
There are 6 types of connective tissues namely:
loose/areolar, fibrous, adipose, bones, cartilage and blood
It is found throughout the body and it holds organs in place.
Loose/Areolar
It is also known as dense connective tissue; It acts as a shock absorber, found in tendons and ligaments.
Fibrous
It is composed of fat storage cells; It facilitates energy storage and insulation.
Adipose
It is composed of fat storage cells; It facilitates energy storage and insulation.
Adipose
It is the hardest connective tissue; it also provides protection, support
Bones
It is composed of collagen fibers embedded in a rubbery protein-carb complex; It also provides strength and support.
Cartilage
It is a fluid connective tissue; it transports oxygen, carbon, dioxide, nutrients; It defends against harmful microorganisms.
Blood
It is composed of cells that possess contractile filaments; It facilitates movement by contraction.
Muscle Tissue
Under the muscle tissue, there are 3 sub-units namely:
Skeletal, Smooth and Cardiac
It is striated and attached to the bones by tendons; it is responsible for voluntary movements.
Skeletal
It lacks striations, and are responsible for involuntary movements.
Smooth
