Lewis Structure and VSEPR Flashcards
What are some exceptions to the Octet Rule and what are their max number of valence electrons?
H - 2 He - 2 Li - 2 Be - 4 B - 6
What is a free radical?
An atom, molecule, or ion with uneven number (unpaired) valence electrons.
When drawing a lewis structure which atom is usually in the center?
The atom with the lowest electronegativity.
What does more electron delocalization in a molecule lead to?
Increased stability
What are the 3 popular types of hybridized orbitals and what kind of bonds do they each have?
sp3 - sigma bonds
sp2 - double bonds
sp - triple bond or 2 double bonds
What does VSEPR stand for and what is it used for?
Valence shell electron pair repulsion theory and it is used to predict the geometry of molecules from the number of electron pairs surrounding their central atoms.
What do more electron pairs do to the angles between atoms?
It makes the angles smaller
What are some important molecular geometries to know and what are their angles in degrees?
Bent - 104.5 Trigonal Pyramidal - 107 Tetrahedral - 109.5 Trigonal Planar - 120 Linear - 180
