Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Are phase changes chemical reactions?
No.
What are the five types of chemical reactions?
Synthesis Decomposition Displacement or Replacement Combustion Oxidation-Reduction
What is a synthesis reaction?
When two or more reactants combine to synthesize a single product.
What is a decomposition reaction?
When a single reactant breaks down into multiple products (endothermic so 𝚫H > 0 )
What are the different types of displacements/replacements
Single = AB + C —> AC + B
Double = AB + CD —> AD + BC
Neutralization = subtype of double.
Acid + Base —> H2O + Salt
What is a combustion reaction?
When a compound reacts (burns) in the presence of oxygen. Reactant contains C,H, and O and products are always CO2 and H2O. (Highly exothermic so 𝚫H < 0)
What is an Oxidation-Reduction reaction?
It is characterized by electron transfer. A molecule is oxidized when it loses and electron and it is reduced when it gains an electron (OIL-RIG)
What does the Conservation of Mass state?
That mass in an isolated system is neither created nor destroyed. This applies to charge as well. (Number of each atoms and charge is same on both sides of reaction)
