Levi-strauss Flashcards
What does Levi-Strauss argue
-texts can be understood through examination of their underlying structure
-meaning is dependent upon and produced through pairs of oppositions
-the way these binary oppositions are resolved can have particular ideological significance.
Examples of binary oppositions
Hero+ villian
Hot+cold
Good+bad
Police+criminal
What is meant by ‘dominant ideology’
Ideas or ideals , especially ones which form the basis of economic or political theory and policy , that are shared by the majority of culture
What is ‘the space between’ and why is it sometimes used in narratives
‘Grey zone’ negotiation between the two binaries
Sometimes reveal contradictions at the heart of the text and can challenge the audience to question their ideological beliefs
