Levers Flashcards
What are levers?
A mechine that transmits energy from one place to another through a rigid structure rotating around an fixed point.
The 3 main elements to a lever?
- Axis - a pivot point, called the fulcrum.
- Resistance - the part to be moved
- Force - the action causing the load to move.
What is a First Class Lever?
The axis is between the resistance to be moved and the force used to move it. Eg. a seesaw
What is a sporting example for a First Class Lever?
When a athlete throws a javelin, here the elbow joint is the fulcrum, the force is provided by the hand and the resistance by the upper arm.
What is a Second Class Lever?
The axis is at the end of the lever and the resistance is between it and the force. Eg. a Wheelbarrow
What is a sporting example for a Second Class Lever?
Standing on tiptoe with the fulcrum at the ball of foot. A volley ball player would use this lever system to jump to spike a ball.
What is a Third Class Lever?
The axis is at the end of the lever and the force is applied between it and the resistance. Eg bicep curl.
- Most levers in the body fall into this category.
What is a sporting example for a Third Class Lever?
Kicking a soccor ball, where the fulcrum is the knee.
