Levels of Organisation Flashcards
How are tissues formed?
Cells combine with extracellular material
Cells
Smallest unit of life
What are the 4 main types of tissue?
Epithelia (exposed)
Connective tissue (support and store energy)
Muscle tissue (contracts)
Neural tissue (conducts)
Definition of an organ
A discrete collection of two or more tissues cooperatively performing a function
Integumentary system
Consists of the hair, skin/epidermis and fingernails
Protection, sensation, thermoregulation
Organisation pathway
Chemical level- cellular-tissue-organ-organ system- organism
Skeletal system
Consists of axial (back, neck, chest) and appendicular skeleton
Structure, movement, blood cell production, support
Difference between axial and appendicular
Axial are bones or muscles that are in the back, chest or head
Appendicular bones or muscles are everything else that attach to these
Muscular system
Consists of all muscles in the body
Contraction for movement
Nervous system
Consists of the CNS and PNS
For communication
Endocrine system
Consists of hormones and glands
Function is chemical regulation and communication
Cardiovascular system
Consists of the heart, capillaries, veins and arteries
Transports gases and nutrients
Lymphatic system
Consists of lymph nodes, thymus gland and the spleen
Immune defense
Digestive system
Consists of salivary gland, pharynx, esophagus, liver, stomach, gall bladder, large intestine, small intestine and anus
Function is for nutrient absorption
Respiratory system
Consists of the nasal cavity, sinuses, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs and diaphragm
Function - ventilation (gases in and out)
