Levels of Measurement Flashcards
What are the 4 levels of measurement?
- Nominal
- Ordinal
- Interval
- Ratio
What are the characteristics of Ordinal scales?
- Ranked groups
- ordered along same dimension
- Each group listed has more of something than the previous one
- Ex: Top ten party schools, socio-economic status.
What are the characteristics of Nominal scales?
- Classify into categories or groups
Categories must be:
- Mutually exclusive (only 1 category should fit each person)
- Exhaustive (all options should be present)
- Equivalent (same general level for all options)
- -Ex: Sex, Ethnicity, Religion
What are the characteristics of Interval scales?
- Ordered
- But with equal intervals in between (The distance between the numbers are the same)
- Ex: SAT scores, standardized test scores.
What measure of central tendency would you use for Nominal Scales?
Mode- most frequently occurring
What are the characteristics of Ratio scales?
- Equidistant intervals with an absolute zero
- Ex: Texts sent per day, # of compliments.
What measure of central tendency would you use for interval and ratio scales?
Mean, median or mode.
What measure of central tendency would you use for ordinal scales?
Mode or Median (Middle Value)
What are the characteristics of Ratio scales?
- Ordered
- With equal distance between intervals
- And, a meaningful zero (true zero that indicates absence of what is being measured)
- e.g., height or weight
What measure of central tendency would you use for nominal scales?
Mode (the most frequently selected category)
