Leutinizing Hormone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone, Hormone Tests Flashcards
What are FSH and LH known as together?
gonadotropin
What is the function of LH and FSH?**
stimulate gonads
essential for reproduction
regulate aspects of gonadal function in both sexes
What is the function of LH?**
secrete sex steroids
helps make testosterone
helps make estrogen
How does LH help make testosterone?**
LH binds to Leydig cells to make testosterone
How does LH help make estrogen?**
Theca cells respond to LH, which converts to testosterone
granulosa cells then convert testosterone to estrogen through granulosa cells
What can happen if a patient is on statin drugs?
it could lead to infertility
What are some serious problems that can occur because of hormone imbalance?
arthritis, asthma, autoimmune dieseases, cancer, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetess, fibromyalgia, heart disease, hypertension, hypotension, immune system disease, inflammation, infertility, osteoporosis, thyroid problems
What is the function of FSH?
stimulates maturation of ovarian follicles
support sperm maturation and supports function of Stertoli cells
how is LH and FSH regulated?
by pulses of GnRH
What is the negative feedback for GnRH?
sex steroids inhibit secretions of GnRF, which have negative effects on gonadotrophs
What are the symptoms of low FSH and LH in men?**
erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, infertility, low energy
What are the symptoms of high FSH in males?**
headaches, visual impairment, hormonal deficiencies
What are the symptoms of low and high FSH in females?**
oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea, infertility
What is the most frequently prescribed drug for fertility?**
Clomid
What are some side effects of clomid?**
headache, abnormal uterine bleeding, breast tenderness or discomfort, bluured vision, flushing, nausea, vomitin, diarrhea, pelvic pain, denderness, pressure or swelling
