Q

neutrophils: appearance + functions

A
  • granular, light purple, multi-lobed nucleus
  • first to arrive at infection site, strong phagocytosis (cell eating)

eosinophils: appearance + functions

A
  • granular, deep red, bi-lobed nucleus
  • show up during allergic reaction + parasitic worm infection

Q

basophils: appearance + function

A
  • very large granules which sometimes obscure nucleus, deep blue
  • release histamine (stimulates inflammation) + heparin (stops clotting)

Q

lymphocytes: appearance + function

A
  • agranular, the smallest WBC, nucleus takes up almost whole cell
  • two types:
    T cells: attack pathogens/
    tumor cells
    B cells: produce antibodies

Q

monocytes: appearance + function

A
  • agranular, largest WBC, kidney shaped nucleus
  • when they leave blood stream, they go into tissue and become macrophages (eat debris, old skin cells, bacteria)
