Blood + blood clotting Flashcards
What are the formed elements?
leukocytes (WBCs), erythrocytes (RBCs), and platelets
Centrifuged blood separates into?
plasma on top, buffy coat in middle (leukocytes + platelets), erythrocytes (called hematocrit in this context) on bottom
What are platelets composed of?
mostly water, then proteins (albumins, globulins, fibrinogen), wastes, nutrients, hormones, gases
What vitamin is necessary for coagulation?
Vitamin K
What is clotting factor 10?
prothrombin converts to thrombin, which turns fibrinogen into fibrin polymers
What is clotting factor 8?
Turns fibrin polymers into fibrin monomers
What is a thrombosis?
a clot in a blood vessel that’s connected to a vital organ
What is infarction?
the death of tissue caused by a thrombosis
what is an embolism?
a thrombosis that breaks off and travels
